Demonstration Garden

Balboa Park Native Plant Demonstration Garden

A compact hillside garden in Morley Field featuring native plants, bioswales, paths, and species associated with the San Diego region.

The garden occupies less space than expected for a park of Balboa Park's size, but its creators made thoughtful use of the hillside. It packs many plants, a couple of bioswales, and a good pathway into a relatively small area.

Overview

Balboa Park hosts a small California Native Plant Demonstration Garden in Morley Field, adjacent to the tennis courts and a dog park. The garden features many plants native to San Diego and other parts of Southern California that are suitable for home landscaping.

There is not a large amount of land dedicated to the garden, but it packs in many plants, a couple of bioswales, and a good pathway. A protected natural area is nearby.

The place

This is a compact municipal native plant demonstration garden built on a hillside within Balboa Park's Morley Field area. It is not one of the park's large formal gardens; instead, it functions as a concentrated display of native plants and water-conscious landscape features.

The garden is more manicured than the wilder canyon areas within Balboa Park, but it provides a direct introduction to species found in San Diego and elsewhere in Southern California.

What to see

The garden follows a hillside path next to the tennis courts. Plants found in both San Diego and Los Angeles include sagebrushes, black sage, and lemonade berry. More locally relevant examples include San Diego sagebrush (Artemisia palmeri) and honey mesquite. Honey mesquite grows in the lower part of the garden. As the path works uphill, the planting transitions toward pinyons and Torrey pines near the top. The site also includes a couple of bioswales and a path that makes the compact planting easy to examine. Path lined with Sagebrush, Chamise, and other native plants

Field notes

When I first learned about the native demonstration garden at Morley Field, I was eager to see it. My initial reaction was disappointment that so little of Balboa Park's acreage had been dedicated to the native garden.

That impression changed while looking more closely. The creators clearly put thought into the garden and made the most of the limited hillside space available.

Native plants

The garden includes plants shared with the Los Angeles region, including sagebrushes, black sage, and lemonade berry, alongside plants with stronger San Diego associations. San Diego sagebrush (Artemisia palmeri) is one of the more locally relevant plants. Honey mesquite is also notable. Although it has been listed among the world's highly invasive species outside its native range, San Diego lies within its natural range. Its adaptation to dry climates includes a very deep taproot, and its seed pods are edible. Torrey pine (Pinus torreyana) is another regionally important plant. Its wild distribution is limited to coastal San Diego and Santa Rosa Island, making it one of the garden's most distinctive local species.
Coast Prickly Pear (Opuntia littoralis)
Coast Prickly Pear grows throughout San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties. The fruit is a valuable food for animals and humans alike.

Garden design

The garden uses its slope to organize the planting. Honey mesquite appears in the lower portion, while pinyons and Torrey pines are encountered higher on the hill. The path provides a clear route through the garden, and bioswales make the water strategy visible. The compact layout demonstrates how a relatively small space can hold a broad native plant collection without functioning as a conventional ornamental border.

Wildlife

A small protected natural area lies adjacent to the demonstration garden. Foot traffic is prohibited there, but the area can be viewed from its boundary.

Mustard and horehound were visible within the preserve, along with clear wildlife activity, including many birds and butterflies.

Home garden takeaways

The garden demonstrates how native plants can be organized along a slope and combined with a practical path and bioswales. The change from lower-elevation desert-associated plants to pines higher on the hill also provides an example of using site position to structure a planting.

Because many of the plants are suitable for home landscapes, the garden works as a reference point for plant combinations, mature form, spacing, and water-conscious design.

Before you go

The garden is in Morley Field next to the tennis courts and a dog park. It is built on a hillside and is relatively compact.

The nearby natural area is roped off and should be viewed only from outside its boundary. The demonstration garden itself has a defined path for moving through the planting.
