Pocket Park

Egret Park

A small river-path access point with a distinctive gate and opportunities to watch waterfowl in the LA River.

A modest stop rather than a major destination, but a useful place to pause, look into the river, and notice birds and waterfowl.

Overview

There is not a lot to say about Egret Park as a standalone destination. It sits beside the river, and its name points your attention toward what is already there. Like the other parks, it can be a good place for birdwatching and for pausing long enough to notice the river.

The place

This is a small access point and stopping place along the LA River bike and walking path rather than a conventional activity park.

What to see

The distinctive gate is the main built feature. In the river, we saw waterfowl, including ducks with ducklings.

Field notes

I am not sure what the gate is really for, since the wall next to it is only a couple of feet tall. I assume it is meant to signal whether the walk is open or closed depending on the time of day; its practical effect as a barrier is minimal.

Native plants

I did not make a separate plant inventory at Egret Park. Its main ecological value during this visit was the view and access it provided to the river corridor.

Photography

A longer lens would be useful for photographing birds in the channel. I did not carry mine because I was visiting with my son.

Visiting with kids

The park works as a short stop with children, although birdwatching may require more patience than younger visitors have.

Before you go

Treat Egret Park as part of a riverwalk itinerary rather than as a destination that needs a long visit.
