Oso Park

Oso Park is nested within a neighborhood, and this is where I really appreciated the value of this kind of small park.

It is not a large activity park where you spend the whole day. It is a community space along a walk: somewhere neighbors can sit, pass through, meet, or hang out for a bit.

This is a compact neighborhood park near the LA River. It has animal sculptures, sycamores, landscaping, shade, and places to sit.

The sculptures depict local animals, including a bear, deer, and mountain lions. They pay respect to local fauna and to the idea that the river corridor remains habitat after everything that has been done to it.

Our intended destination was Steelhead Park, but we ended up at Oso Park, which had most of the signage. From there, we walked toward the river but failed to find Steelhead Park.

Missing it felt appropriate to the day: the river corridor is confusing, layered, not always well marked, and still worth returning to.

California sycamores provide part of the park’s shade and help connect the neighborhood space visually to the river corridor.

The animal sculptures emphasize bear, deer, mountain lions, and the larger idea of the LA River as habitat.

The animal sculptures, especially the bear, are the park’s clearest photographic subjects.

The animal sculptures and compact layout make this an easy stop with children.

Oso Park and Steelhead Park are not interchangeable. We found Oso Park while attempting to navigate to Steelhead Park.
